Opening your first paint by numbers kit is exciting — and a little overwhelming. There's a canvas covered in tiny numbers, a collection of small paint pots, a few brushes, and the nagging question: where do I even start? The good news is that paint by numbers is genuinely designed for beginners. But a few practical tips can be the difference between a frustrating first session and one that leaves you already reaching for your next kit.

Before You Pick Up a Brush

• 1. Set up your space first — Good lighting is everything. Many beginners struggle to read the small numbers on the canvas. Cover your table and keep a cup of water and paper towels within reach at all times.
• 2. Start with the right kit — Choose a design with larger sections and fewer colors. Landscapes and abstract designs are more forgiving than portraits for your first attempt.

How to Paint

• 3. Work top to bottom, left to right — Start at the top corner and work downward to avoid smearing wet sections with your hand or wrist.
• 4. Use the hybrid approach — Paint one color at a time for large background areas. Work section by section for detail areas. Best of both methods.
